Save Your Teeth for a Healthy Smile

You might need root canal treatment (also known as “endodontics”) if the nerve supply of your tooth (known as the pulp) becomes infected through decay or injury. Endodontic dental treatments aim to treat tooth infection and inflammation that can cause severe discomfort.

Most importantly, as well as relieving pain, root canals can save your tooth: helping you avoid unsightly gaps in your smile as well as costly replacements such as dental implants, dentures or bridges.

Root Canal Treatment at Atrium Dental

At Atrium Dental, we provide comfortable root canal treatment to save your teeth and prevent the need for extractions.

If you're suffering from a severe toothache - such as constant pain or throbbing - you might need root canal treatment. Our skilled dentists understand that this is a daunting prospect - especially for nervous patients - but we're here to guide you back to optimum oral health.

Emergency Dental Treatment

We know that there's no convenient time to have a dental emergency. If you're suffering from discomfort or swelling, we aim to see you as soon as possible.

When the nerve of a tooth is damaged, inflamed or infected, this can cause severe discomfort. We therefore set aside  same-day and next-day appointments  for root treatment when you need it most. You'll likely feel considerable relief after just one appointment.

Your Treatment Journey

When visiting Atrium Dental, you'll receive the same high level of service whether you've arrived with a toothache or a routine dental examination.

Your dentist will complete root treatment over 2-3 visits. The first appointment is to clean the inside of the tooth to remove bacteria. You’ll have an antibiotic dressing with a temporary filling. Your tooth is left to settle for a week or so before returning for further treatment or to place a permanent filling.

At your second or third appointment, you’ll have the dressing removed, and we’ll clean the tooth again before filling the root and crown of your tooth. Root fillings are made of gutta-percha, a rubber-like material designed to fit inside the tooth's roots.

Comfortable Root Treatment

We understand that root treatment has a bad reputation and can fill patients with dread. This impression is based on old stories of dentists using antiquated technology. Today, thanks to modern advancements, we are able to provide root canal treatment that is safe and comfortable.

At Atrium Dental, you'll receive a local anaesthetic to numb the area before we start treatment. You'll also have a rubber dam fitted to stop water from getting into your mouth and keep the single tooth we’re treating clean and dry.

The rubber dam uses a small "clamp" around your tooth to hold the rubber sheet. Most patients tell us it seems odd at first but soon get used to it - especially when it means they can swallow as normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a root canal?

Root canals are spaces within the roots of teeth. These are naturally occurring spaces within teeth. Inside the pulp chamber are the main canals - as well as more intricate anatomical branches that join the root canals together or extend to the surface of the tooth roots. The smaller branches mostly grow near the end of the root but may be found at any point along its length. Most roots have at least one main canal.

The pulp is a connective tissue that fills this space. This is the tissue that forms the dentin portion of the tooth in adult teeth. Once the tooth has reached its final size and shape, the original function of the dental pulp ceases. The dental pulp then serves as a sensory organ.

Why do I need root treatment?

When the pulp becomes infected, the infection may spread to the tooth's root canal system. This can result in an abscess. Abscesses are swollen, inflamed areas of the body where pus builds up, and they can be intensely painful and uncomfortable. Root treatment relieves pain by treating the infection and prevents the need for extraction if successful.

What are the symptoms of an abscess?

The symptoms of an abscess can range from a dull ache to severe pain and may include face or neck swelling. A tooth with an abscess may be tender to the bite, and you may be kept up at night by the pain. Without root treatment, the infection may spread, and, unless treated, the tooth will probably need to be extracted.

Will I need further treatment afterwards?

Root treatment does require us to access the canals through the top of the tooth. The process can weaken the crown (the tooth's visible part). Your dentist may recommend placing a dental crown over the top to help prevent future breakages.

How long is the recovery after root canal treatment?

You may have a small amount of discomfort for a few days. Any discomfort should go away with regular pain medication such as paracetamol or ibuprofen.

You should experience significant relief after your first treatment. Teeth rarely fail to settle after root treatment. If you’re in an increasing amount of pain, please call us so that we can book you another appointment as soon as possible.

You can help your recovery by eating softer foods, chewing on the opposite side of your mouth, and generally giving that tooth a rest. Your dental team will provide you with all of the aftercare instructions you'll need to speed up your recovery.
